Pool Turnover Rate

The time required for the entire pool volume to pass through the filtration system once. Illinois IDPH sets maximum turnover times by facility type.

What it actually means in practice

Turnover rate is how long your filter takes to process one pool's worth of water. Semi-public pools in Illinois typically require a 6-hour turnover; wading pools and splash pads require 1-hour turnover. The calculation is (pool volume in gallons) ÷ (flow rate in gallons per minute) ÷ 60 = turnover in hours. Undersized pumps, clogged filters, or hydraulic design flaws can silently push turnover past code. Inspectors ask to see turnover math for every permitted pool.

What people commonly get wrong

  • Faster turnover isn't always better — oversized pumps can stress plumbing and increase energy costs.

  • A pool that `looks clear` can still fail turnover-rate math.

  • Replacing a pump without re-verifying turnover is a common contractor error. Flow rate changes mean new math.
